Sharp’s AQUOS DV-ACV52 HD DVR handles DVD, HDV, and VHS

Sharp’s HD DVR lineup has been steadily (albeit quietly) growing for a few years now, and while the company did loose five new offerings in the AQUOS DVR arena earlier this year, the multi-faceted DV-ACV52 has the stage all to itself now. Besides packing a built-in digital TV tuner, 250GB hard drive, and HDMI outputs, this convergence device allows playback and dubbing on a variety of formats including VHS, DVD, or DV / HDV via the i.Link FireWire connector. Other niceties include composite / S-Video outs, optical audio output, and the ability to record one OTA broadcast to the HDD while another goes straight to VHS / DVD. Sadly, we don’t envision this Japanese-bound unit ever gracing US shores, but it will be making smiles across the sea next month for around $925.

Alweer voor de spiegel

Once Again in Front of the Mirror is een concept PC ontworpen door Won-Chul Kim. Deze PC is een van de winnaars van de PC Design Contest 2007 gesponsord door Intel en Samsung in Korea.

De monitor zit op de plek waar je eigenlijk een spiegel zou verwachten en de PC is als geheel netjes geintegreerd in het meubel. Misschien zal een van deze grootmachten deze PC ooit gaan produceren en dan heb je een fantastische fashion accesoire! Ook is dit natuurlijk een mooi kadootje voor de Koningin. Jammer voor haar is ze morgen stiekum toch niet jarig.

Fuh Yuan retracts $299 Wal-Mart HD DVD statement

That sound you’re hearing is your hopes of a $299 HD DVD player anytime in the immediate future deflating, that is, is Fuh Yuan is to be believed this time around. Unfortunately, it seems that the firm pulled the trigger a bit too soon on a hopeful order, as a recent retraction on the company’s website insinuates that Wal-Mart simply inquired about their ability to “provide a schedule” along with “cost and quantity” details for Wally World to evaluate. Currently, it seems that the “capacity is still under consideration,” but it did leave the door open to believe that this idea may still be churning in the background by cordially inviting anyone with an up-to-snuff manufacturing facility to ping them for more details. The good news is that a sub-$300 HD DVD player isn’t a matter of “if,” it’s just a matter of “when,” and as long as Wal-Mart keeps burning down price barriers, we’re sure it’ll surface (arguably) soon.

BBC, ITV to launch free satellite HDTV in UK by 2008

Although there’s a lot of grumbling in the UK about that £135 ($270) yearly television license fee (only $87 for a black and white set!), it’s hard to complain that the BBC doesn’t try to use all that money in cool ways. Adding to their already-ambitious plans to distribute HDTV through torrent, datacasting, and IPTV, the Beeb announced today that, after years of delays, they’ve been approved to pair up with ITV and launch a free 200-channel HD-capable satellite service called Freesat in the spring of 2008. The move is designed to provide digital service to the estimated 25% of the British public that can’t get the successful Freeview DVB-T service, but it’ll also be free to any license payer who ponys up for one of the several available interactive receivers. Hmm, that’s an interesting version of “free,” must be the British spelling.

HiPE intros voice-operated Drive-N car PCs with Vista MCE

People have been cramming PC’s of all kinds into cars ever since LCD screens became ubiquitous, and even a little before that. HiPE’s new Drive-N series of car PCs is designed to ease the usual DIY-grind by sporting a laundry list of features and interface possibilities. The units, ranging in price from $799 for a barebones Via C7 in an amp-style chassis up to $2199 for a tricked-out double-DIN touchscreen monster, all run Windows Vista MCE with the One Voice command system, and can be outfitted with GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, XM, and even a rearview camera. The machines can also interface with your car’s OBD II unit to let you monitor vehicle diagnostics, as well as clear out some of those annoying error messages you usually have to let the dealer handle. All these features are nice, but nothing can excuse HiPE’s lame-o tagline: “Why drive when you can be Drive-N?” Yeah, and why hire a marketing firm when you can just ask your 12-year-old niece?

Samsung rolls out Bluetooth-equipped “PAVV Cannes” plasma TV

According to Samsung, that makes this the world’s first Bluetooth certified TV, letting you getting some additional use out of your wireless headset and printer (among other peripherals). The TV itself also looks to be impressive enough, boasting a full 1080p resolution and packing ACAP support for some two-way data broadcasting. Like the other sets in the line, this one’s exclusive to the Korean market for the time being, where it’ll set you back 4,300,000 won, or about $4,640.

R2-D2 goes multimedia

Aan R2-D2 gadgets is geen gebrek! Vandaag is hij gelukkig geen brievenbus, maar een R2-D2 Skype Webcam of een R2-D2 DVD Projector!

Speelgoedfabrikant Nikko brengt deze zomer in een gelimiteerde en genummerde uitgave deze twee R2-D2 gadgets op de markt. De 350 dollar kostende R2-D2 webcam is draadloos en hij kan nog rondrijden ook. Je kunt hem besturen met het lichtzwaard, dat tevens als Skype telefoonhoorn dient. Ook wordt er een speciale versie van Skype meegeleverd. Hiermee is het mogelijk van een andere locatie R2 te bedienen en hem dus te laten rondrijden en foto’s of filmpjes te laten schieten! Kijk anders eens naar het promopraatje van deze Amerikaanse verkoper.

De R2-D2 DVD projector is een R2 met een ingebouwde iPod dock, DivX DVD speler, een kaartlezer en een USB aansluiting. Maar met de VGA aansluiting en de overige audio en video in- en uitgangen kun je er van alles op aansluiten! Je kunt allerlei videobeelden op 1024*768 pixels bij een helderheid van 1800 lumen en een contrast van 1000 op 1 op je mooie, witte muur bekijken. Daarnaast heb je de Millennium Falcon als een afstandsbediening, waarmee je ook deze R2 draadloos kunt bedienen en zelfs laten rondrijden! Deze projector kost je wel ruim 2200 euro, dus tjek eerst maar naar het filmpje:
