Okoro intros the CX-series of CableCARD-equipped HTPCs

We’d heard the Okoro was planning shipping entry-level CableCARD HTPCs, and the firm’s made good on that promise, unveiling the $1795 OMS-CX100 today. Apart from that all-important ATI TV Wonder DCT breakout box, the CX100 features a 2.3GHz Intel E6550 Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA 8500GT graphics, 2GB of memory and 320GB of storage, and Vista Ultimate. HD DVD and Blu-ray are separate options depending on your format allegiance, but for someone looking to make the HTPC leap in a Cable Labs-approved way, it’s not a bad deal at all.

Nieuwe Biostar Microtech high-end videokaart

Als je niet meer tevreden bent met je huidige videokaart waarmee je nog maar net Doom 3 kan spelen, is het zinvol om eens aan een upgrade te gaan denken. En als je het hele jaar lief geweest bent, krijg je misschien wel deze nieuwe grafische kaart van Biostar Microtech in je schoen!

De op de Nvidia GeForce 8800GT gebaseerde Sigma Gate V8803GT52-videokaart is compatibel met de nieuwste PCIe 2.0 bus-architectuur en derhalve ook met 5GT/s breedband. Verder kent de kaart 112 stream processoren, een 256-bit frame buffer, standaard GeForce 8 mogelijkheden en DirectX 10 support. De Biostar Microtech Sigma Gate V8803GT52 gaat rond de 175 euro gaan kosten en zal vanaf december verkrijgbaar zijn.

2 miljoen Leopards verkocht

FCC looking to facilitate programming competition for apartments

Apartment dwellers frustrated with the outright lack of choices when it comes to selecting a content provider may soon be feeling relief, as the FCC is expected to approve a new rule that would “throw out exclusive cable television service contracts with apartment buildings and open up competition to phone companies.” Supposedly, the new regulation “could significantly lower cable prices for millions of subscribers who live in apartment buildings and have had no choice in selecting a company for paid television,” and of course, the execs at Verizon and AT&T are likely licking their chops at the notion of being able to steal away precious market share while potentially providing a cost savings to boot. Granted, some states already have provisions in place to prevent landlords and tenant associations from inking exclusive deals with cable providers, but for those currently stuck in a “take it or leave it” situation, all that could be changing in the very near future.

Disco kubus

Raar maar waar: deze IXOS Xmas Disco Cube. Het is alweer het zoveelste iPod dock, maar met kleurrijke LEDs ingebouwd, waardoor je hetzelfde effect krijgt als met zo’n glitterbol in een discotheek. Zit een 3W subwoofer in, en je kunt zowel 3G-6G iPods als nano’s aansluiten.

Pushover

In 1992 verscheen Pushover , een zeer verslavend puzzelspel, voor Dos. De hoofdfiguur in het door zoutjesfabrikant Smiths gesponsorde spel is zijn geliefde zakken chips kwijtgeraakt en kan ze alleen terugkrijgen via het omgooien van dominosteentjes. Helaas moeten daarbij wel de nodige stenen worden verplaatst om alle blokjes in het parcours met één duw om te laten vallen. Speciale stenen die ontploffen, door blijven kantelen of opstijgen helpen daarbij. In elk level wordt de klus lastiger maar na een paar opgeloste puzzels krijgt de hoofdfiguur wél een zak chips terug. Wij vonden een remake die het prima doet onder Windows XP, dus gooi maar om die stenen!

Dell XPS One

Naast de produktnaam ‘One’, worden alles-in-een PC’s steeds populairder. Na de iMac, Vaio LT en Gateway One, combineert Dell beide trends door de XPS One PC-in-een-monitor op de markt te brengen.

Dell biedt in haar XPS One een Core2Duo processor, een ATI mobility HD2400, tot 4GB geheugen, een blu-ray brander, WiFi, bluetooth, een kaartlezer, stereo speakers en een webcam allemaal in de 22 inch WSXGA monitor. Aan de zijkant vind je multimediaknoppen, ook worden een draadloze muis, toetsenbord en afstandsbediening meegeleverd. De XPS One is nog niet officieel aangekondigd, dus de specificaties zijn nog niet 100% zeker.

Dell XPS

Dell heeft vorige week de XPS 420 geïntroduceerd, een multimediasysteem voorzien van een Xcelerator, voor het omzetten van video, en een klein LCD-schermpje op de systeemkast. Je krijgt er Adobe Elements Studio bij voor videobewerking. Kost: 1349 euro, helaas weer wel zonder monitor.

Starz announces Vongo 2.0 with slightly expanded portable device support

We haven’t heard much from Vongo since the company announced it was a Vista launch partner in January, but Starz’s scrappy video-on-demand division just unveiled the 2.0 version of the service today — although it’s a little unclear what’s been changed apart from a supported portable device list that now numbers an absolutely astonishing seven. The chosen few PMPs include devices from Archos (which we sort of figured), Creative, and Toshiba, with additional support for any number of Media Center Extenders. Of course, users of the $10 / month service can only use it on three devices at a time including PCs, so you’ll probably run out of activations before you try to add another PMP or Media Center Extender, but it’s a nice thought, at least.
